I am not afraid. It's just scary!

Dear guys,
Two days ago I read an article on the Net about different phobias that people living in big cities have. Particularly it was about the fear to be pushed under the subway train in the rush hour – research showed that more than 70 per cent of Moscovites are afraid of the arriving train.
What are you afraid of?

Oh...As for me, I have a lot of different fobias, but they are not constant. In other words sometimes I'm afraid of something, but next day I'm not afraid of it. For example sometimes I fear to go downstairs, because it's seems to me that I will fall. and I imagine how I will be rolling on the footsteps. It's really awful! And strange...
And of course I'm scared of the arriving train. This phobia appeared when my mom told me one story about the friend of my aunt and her sister. This sister and her best friend went to Moscow and the sister of my aunt's friend pushed her under the train. after that I became be more careful and prudent in the subway.
I can endlessly list all my fears: darkness, planes, worms... Sometimes I feel that I need in the psycological treatment...

And as for me - I'm not afraid of the arriving train...I dont know why, just never cared. But still there are some things that can scare me. They are darkness, height (sometimes) and problems with internet connection. Seriously. Especially the last one.

Arriving subway train is a scary thing. Actually subway as a whole is a nightmare... Though I would rather go there then struggle with the Moscow traffic)))But being serious - I am, as anyone living in North America, afraid of shootings in public places.Canada is still safer than US, but even here such things happen. Im not only talking about some gangs fights, I mean something that happened last Christmas in US - a crazy guy came to a shopping mall and started randomly shooting at people and then shot himself.

of course, phobia is a terrible thing, but everybody, I think, has something to be afraid of. By the way, most of the fears has it's background,it's reason. As for me, last year I wasn't afraid of the trains at all. On the contrary, I adored it,as when I was a child, I used to travel with my dad by train. But this summer a terrible tragedy happened with my friend and now I can't easily cross the rail ways. But unfortunately I have to do it at least twice a week(( at that moments there are a lot of really scared pictures in my head'((

phobia..mm..i suppose everybody has it,and the main problem of it is overcoming. As for me i don't afraid such things as trains, buses actually trafic in general. All our fears exists because of us,we often think about it,so they become stonger, they fill our mind;to my mind fear is a kind of illness,if u one day allow it take possession over u, it will be rather difficult to get rid of it.

I am also afraid of public shooting or public stubbings, as in Japan where I am now there are a lot of people going mad, though generally life is safe here. The fact that you can't control other people's behavior is very scary.
As for the subway, I had uneasy feeling after the terracts both in Moscow and Tokyo subways, but as time goes by, the fear is becoming less.

Oh, Raspberry, how lucky you are! I envy you, really=( because I can’t get rid of my fears!
One of them is DOGS! In my childhood a dog frightened me and when I see them on my way, I always tremble with fear…
Another thing, which makes me feel unpleasantly, is cars, because my 6-year-old cousin died under the wheels of it,and when I cross a road, I, as you Enkeli, have stupid pictures on my mind…
=)By the way, recently I have begun to be afraid of trains and current – it’s an influence of our English lesson with your terrible stories, my dear group mates=)
… oh, God! there are so mane things, horrifying me, that I am going to be afraid of leaving my flat! I need medical help=)

Few weeks ago I found myself beeing afread of a subway...as strange it may sounds...
And as it is written in an article it is about the fear to be pushed under the subway train...I even imagine this picture once)))I know that I just worked up myself too much...
I didn`t even think that there are people with the same phobia as mine))
Talking about the subway I should add that it is a terrible place...Coming down there with high spirits I doubt that when you will go out of it your mood will be the same...especially these grumbling old women

Hello))) I'm not afraid of the arriving train... but of course I have got fobias... I am afraid of height, even when I wipe a dust from a luster, my legs are trembling!!.. It seems that I shall fall!!! I can not look horror films, then it is heavy fall asleep.. Only with included light I spend the rest of night!!!! All people have got their own mentality and phobias!! For example many people are afraid of the dentist, even when become adults... Much depends on children's impressions.

Anonymous said...

Oh..I forgot to tell you about my old and the main phobias! It is a fear of the dark...I don`t think it is the dark it`s-self but the fact that you can`t see if someone is there... especially if you stay at home alone or after seeing some horro movie!
Like when you have that feeling that someones watching you, that`s the creepiest feeling to have in the dark...
I prefer the dark only when I'm sleeping))

Hi! As it turned out there are so many fears everyone of us does have. And it's not surprising because most people are very impressionable and highly imaginative. As for me, I fear cockroaches to death! They are just so offensive with their disgusting antennae and bellies of unpleasant colouration. Once my parents and I were having rest in Bulgaria. I was going to bed and suddenly I saw a huge black-beetle sitting on my pillow. I think you guess what action of mine followed... Of course I began to screech. Thanks to my Dad who ran into the room and throw it away. What's more I hate and also take fright of spiders, especially big ones. And another phobia of mine is a fear of sticking in an elevator. Unfortunately, some years ago it happened to me and I didn't like that desperate situation when I was waiting for help for 2 hours in the whole darkness and isolation(.

lasvegas said...

Dear, Shikidim! I'm also afraid of horror films...I even don't watch the advertising of it on TV!!! After that I began be scared of the darkness=(
And I've just remember my the most foolish fear... It's making a speech in front of the audience. It's really stupid, but it's my big problem! Maybe anybody knows, how to help me to overcome this fear?

Anonymous said...

Dear, Lasvegas! I just want to say that everybody of us is afraid of appearance in public, even professors with great experience of maiden speech. My piece of advice is to try to take it easier and conduct yourself calmly while you're making your speech, then noone will suggect that you're being nervous during your performance. Also I'd like to add that phsychologists proved that rubbing hands promotes your limpness and ensures confidence of your strength. I hope something I've written will be useful for you to overcome your fear. I wish you good luck!)

Hmm...All of u have said that everybody had their own phobias. And I think that u are quite right.Because in the russian language we even have a wonferful proverb: "Only fools do not afraid".
As for me,firstly, I am afraid of war.Because the understanding that in one moment u can loose everything, puts me in a gloomy mood.Yes,I am really greatly afraid of war!!... Because I know the statistics, that every generation in this world have seen a war and that every next war is more terrify than the previous one.For example,I believe that if the war breaks out, it will be with the use of atomic weapon or chemical weapons(mass destruction weapons). Save God I will not see it...
And,secondly, I am afraid of loosing people who are dear to me...We should appreciate what we have..
Dear E.Yu,thanks a lot for such interesting topic for discussion.

Dear Onyx, your pieces of advice are useful, I am sure, they will help me too, so thank you =)
I used to be afraid of audience too, but reading the book of Dale Carnegie about making a speech helped me very much: I found there a lot of clever tips, so, dear Lasvegas, I strongly recommend you to read it =)
Moreover, when I have to make speech, I always remember the advice of E.Yu: you should try to love the topic of your speech, because your enthusiasm can make the audience interest in what you are speaking about (and they may forgive your mistakes=)

I have never been afraid of train i even like to watch how its comming frome tunnel...but i SO AFRAID of snakes!!!! and all reptiles!!!i hate tham all!!!!...it was abot 3-4 years ago we walked on a summer residence and saw a snake!!!than i jumped on my fathers back And he carryed me on his back up to the house...i can soud funny...but i was like a stone...i even couldent move my body!((

Anonymous said...

Dear, inkviz! Forgive me for laughing at your story. Of course, I do sympathize you, because I'm susceptible to snakes too. And you are lucky that your father was next to you at that moment and saved you)))But I didn't understand whether that snake was in cage or it was crawling freely everywhere? How was it found to be at large?

Anonymous said...

I am not afraid of the arriving train. But I have one awful phobia. I am afraid of worms. I understand that they cannot make me anything, but it throws me into trembling, when I see them! They are loathsome!!!

lasvegas said...

Dear onyx and snowflake, thank you VERY much for your advice, I hope that they'll help me to overcome my fear)

Pfff she was behind our house there is a road between ouer house and forest...and she was sitting in the middle of that road...i dont know what snake it was..and i dont remember her size..grrr and in fact dont want to remember that stupid day...realy it was horribl!!!

E.Yu. said...

Dogs! Yes, I also have some irrational fear of dogs. Even if I am in a hurry and suddenly see a big dog on the road or nearby, I will most likely decide to choose a different way. I don't like dogs therefore I can't predict their behaviour and I am afraid of them.
As for public speaking - it's funny - I speak in front of many people every day, but I am also afraid of public speaking - I just got used to it!
As for a war - I am afraid of it too. Especially if to take into consideration the contemporary international situation - the possibility of it is not so vague as we would like.-(((
And I as well imagine things - well, I can say that my imagination works excellently. I think that I need a visit to a doctor just like many of you.-))

Hmm,dogs?)) As for me I'm not afraid of dogs,or trains or worms)) But I'm afraid of long escalators in the underground(hopefully, I got used to it already.Anoher scare-that something awful will happen with my body-especially with eyes. But my main phobia is death of my friend or relative on my eyes..
Brr...

Raspberry said...

my sweet wildangel)),i'm absolutely agree with your statement that "only fooles do not afraid ",i really understand your fears,i think the war is the most cruel thing in the world, where defendeless ,innocent people suffer of our stupid government.
And what about fears, actually a have one;maybe it's stupid but sometimes i'm afraid of dreams,i mean possibility to die unnatural death, from fear during dreaming;i heard many times how people die from heart attack,i think it's very strange and really terryfying when u don't have any insurance arrangements that u are in safe, don't u think so?

hi!
I' m njt afraid of trains or dogs....I really like trains))but I'm afraid of cars at night.....I alweys think that at night they goes faster and can bring down me.
and one more of me phobias is fear of insects...especially spiders.....brrr...

Dear Ruspberry, I don't think anyone can feel safe. One can't know when his (her) days will be over. That's what makes everything more sssscary.

Anonymous said...

Why more ssscary,The Cleverest?? I think that if something MUST be done,it WILL be done)) So that even brings me some amount of adrenaline, and that's why I'm not afraid of trains, cars and so on)) Friendly speaking we can die in every moment,so I think that we mustn't emphasise out attention on such things))

Hello everybody,i read all comments and think that i dont afraid of anything, but when i was younger i was afraid to fly, cause i had one moment in my life when my aunt was a model and she had to fly to other sity and she had a cold and plus all tickets of her group, and ofcourse she didnt come to the airport, everybody was angry with her,but in one hour all of them knew that this plane fell down.and everybody died. And i am afraid of car crashes, cause i heard a lot of stories about it.

Dear The Cleverest, what did u mean by words that it's scary when u don't know the date of your death?if it was possible to know the date of my death i really would refuse to know, cause it slay all your hope,so i think it's better to be not aware of all such things at all

Anonymous said...

hah...I've read all the posts here and it is a little bit funny..)An idea strikes me, that I have never thought about before..There are a lot of people in this world with their own phobias..and they are differ greatly!
My lovely,Raspberry.I think that every person in this world should have an understanding, that there is no place in this world, where u can feel yourselfe in safety..I think, that there is the only way out-to put up with such situation. What is concerned with your phobia of dreaming...hmm..come down, there is nothing to be worried about..I can give u the only advice-u should realize that it is just dreams and nothing serious can happened with u,baby!!I wish u sweet dreams)))))

hm...I'm afraid of insects. Of course I don't scream or freeze in terror when I see it, but sometimes it seems to me that it could creep on me...It's soooo disgusting.
What else? hm.... I'm afraid of being alone in the future, i mean live alone...there are a lot of old people who are ALONE....It's sad!

And a real fear is a war. I'm agree!

Sisi said...

i read all comments.. the fear we have are often the same. as for me I really afraid of terrorists. We cant speak about safety. i always remember about Nord Ost, Beslan, Pyshkinskaja and so on. So many people died there, and i cant imagine what will be with me if I or my close people have such situation.
I dont afraid of big dogs, they are usually kind. But fighten dogs are really awfull.
And one more thing is motorbike, there so many exidents, I want it but I really afraid of it.

Canette said...

As for me i have one phobia(scientifically it calles ophediophobia as I remember). I afraid snakes in panic, I even can't see them on the pictures.
Someone(I don't remeber who it were exactly) told me that we have our phobias from our relatives. For example, if i have the fear of snakes it means that some years ago(may be very many years ago) a snake bited my grandgrandmother or grandgrandfather or something like that. I didn't die after it but he(or she) remebered this accident. And that's way I have such phobia. I don't know is it true or not but let this theory be.
Oh, and about the subway. Sometimes while I'm in the train I think about terrorism and it's scares me very much. I understand that I'm not in safety...

my sweet wildangel, thanks for your advice)
Dear Silence,be more optimistic!)there are a lot of lonely people nevertheless almost everyone find happiness;after all if everything is bad i shall bear u company))

What there dogs and worms? As for me,I am recklessly afraid of snakes and all these creeping creatures, fuuuu! =(

Raspberry said...

worms(((fuuuuuu..it's so disgusting;i have such a very- very bad association with it-when i was 3,my brother Valary decided to dig a very big and deep hole with me in the garden; there were a lot of long and very fat worms,so after a while when i was doing smth instead of digging,Valary turned to me and casted a very huge heap of worms right in me,it was so unexpectedly and disgusting that i have been crying for a long time, then i really hated it especially my brother))),but now i just don't pay attention to them.

The Cleverest said...

Dear Ruspberry, WildAngel has said everything I wanted to say. We don't have a safe place, we don't know the final hour. I am not a fatalist like Little_Switcher, that's why I am afraid not to do lots of things when someting may happen to me. But when I think about it, after all, I guess, if something happens - I wouldn't care.-:)) (Kind of black humour)
By the way, I am afraid of fish, when they swim next to you in a warm sea. When I touch them accidentally, I have cramps. Funny...

Anonymous said...

Dear Lyalinka!
I can't undersyand you! Snakes are not cold or slippery. They are warm, as all animals. I agree that some of them are ugly, but other are very nice and some are really beautiful!!!

Hi!
I think, everyone of us have some fobies. Maybe because we live in such big world, full of danger.
As for me i`m afraid to stay alone at home...i don`t know why, but i always think that someone else are in my house.
Ones my boyfrend sad that he heard how someone walks upstairs in house...and he sad it when we were alone in big house, and we were seeting on the last floor...and he asked me to bring him something from the kitchen. I sad that i`m afraid to go downstairs, and he decided to go by himself...for it was bed idia to stay alone in the room...because he has crept to me and has scared me so much...

And one more my fear, it is to walk in wood. And it not important with whom I walk, with friends or parents...

Anonymous said...

I`ve read all comments and it seems to me that many things we consider to be a phobia are really just disgust. For example worms, insects)))
When I was younger I had many phobias. But during my life I had different things-not very successful flights, two operations,I saw many car crashes and consider myself to be a lucky person because once have not got nearly in a serious accident.
Now I became more fatalist.Generally our life is under our control(we should be careful and clever). But there is no doubt that something we are not able to avoid.
But still I have a one real phobia-that something bad may happen with my relatives. But it is natural.....

Anonymous said...

How many comments!! I completely agree with Gunes. It is a great phobia when something bad may happen with our relatives. It’s horrible. For example, when my brother is ill, I and my mother are worried about him, he is so small and we can’t be calm.

Yes, I agree that the greatest sorrow is the misfortune with your close people: relatives or best friends. I lost my grandma this year and I understand well that it's terrible...

I can not understand why some of us are afraid of arriving trains in subway, because I've never felt the same.
